This painting evolved from a feeling of cold and ice – blues, whites and blue greens in striations that evoked an arctic landscape (there’s even a photo transfer of a polar bear buried in it). The square shapes emerged about halfway through, and the landscape reduced to the blue band at the top. Groome became fascinated with the contrasting textures between the various shapes. She added the striated white rectangle on the left to say ‘Hello’ to the imposing, established white rectangle. At the very end, she simplified the central dark space so that the shapes could float, and your attention could focus.

About the Artist

Patti Groome

Patti Groome is a local Kingston abstract artist who relies on her intuition to explore aesthetics and personal experiences through materiality. Groome primarily works with acrylic, wax and charcoal- using tools to create very textural works. She worked as a graphic designer before obtaining her PhD in epidemiology and going on to become a tenured professor at Queen's University. Upon retirement in 2021, Groome has been able to devote her energy to her art practice- working alongside Michael Flahault and Bob Young as a collective.
