Backyard
By Bob Young
By Bob Young
Picturing the bare ground of March, this painting shows my own backyard. Neighbouring houses peek above fences. It’s about the simple beauty of ordinary places. Although Young used a photo reference, it was only a starting point. For example, with the trees, he consciously changed both their spacing and the width of their trunks—for more variety. Next, the houses are very simplified; the bark colours are greys that stray pretty far from photographic “reality.” Finally, the sky was done with thick paint and expressive brushstrokes. All in all, the purpose was to make an exciting painting out of “dull” material.
