Picturing the bare ground of March, this painting shows my own backyard. Neighbouring houses peek above fences. It’s about the simple beauty of ordinary places. Although Young used a photo reference, it was only a starting point. For example, with the trees, he consciously changed both their spacing and the width of their trunks—for more variety. Next, the houses are very simplified; the bark colours are greys that stray pretty far from photographic “reality.” Finally, the sky was done with thick paint and expressive brushstrokes. All in all, the purpose was to make an exciting painting out of “dull” material.

About the Artist

Bob Young

Bob Young works primarily with oil paint, creating impressionist landscapes of local scenes- specifically urban Kingston. Young is very interested in the climate crisis, his paintings at first glance a beautiful depiction of sunset skies, really a commentary on the fiery sky caused by the planet overheating. Another common theme strung through his work is the power lines dotting our city skylines. He has a background in architecture, urban planning and is a published novelist.
