Solo Show: “Drafting” by Adele Webster

This April we are thrilled to host Adele Webster for her solo show 'Drifting' at the Works Gallery. We will be having an opening reception on April 4th from 5:30 to 8:30pm at 673 Innovation Drive, Kingston. Join us for refreshments, live music performed by Class Act + Karly G, great art and interesting conversation!

Webster is a well-known Kingston artist with a distinct style of beautiful landscape paintings created through the use of layered acrylic paint washes. The horizon line acts a guiding force for her practice.

This collection of new work is inspired by peaceful motion, letting go and being carried away by the flow. The title 'Drifting' refers to  moving slowly and smoothly, often without a set of direction or control. It can describe the movement of clouds, water or even a state of mind- relaxed, unhurried, and carried by natural forces.

The natural world is a source of inspiration for Webster, guided by the shifting seasons as evident in her use of colour palette. Each painting takes upwards of three weeks to complete, with each layer shaping the direction of the next one. Webster paints on custom cradle boards, made using high-quality woods like maple. A key feature of her style is the natural grain coming through the lines of colour wash, creating texture and embracing motifs like clouds and waves. She works with a variety of shapes, expanding beyond four sides to use circular panels- something she equates to a porthole, transporting you into imagined worlds.

Adele Webster is currently represented by prestigious Art spaces across Canada and the United States like Blue Crow Gallery, Blu Dog Art gallery, Santini Gallery, Argyle Fine Art, Crown & Press, Drew Marc Gallery, and Arta Gallery. She participated in Toronto's Artist Project for three years in a row. She is closely associated with fellow Kingston artists Michelle Reid and Alice Melo, affectionately called 'The Kingston Trio'. Throughout the summer months you can find her at various Art Markets including Art in the Park and Capitol Art Fair in Ottawa, Women's Art Festival and Kingston ArtFest.

She was born in England before moving to Kingston in her childhood, she later attended St. Lawrence College for Creative Arts and Graphic Design. She became a full-time artist during the pandemic and spent time as an Artist in Residence at the Tett center. Webster has spent her life exploring different artistic pursuits and creative endeavours, constantly drawn to the horizon line, its representation and ideology.
